In December 2015 we were challenged to build a house in Nepal after the devastating earthquake. Redgorton and Stanley Parish raised enough for a house and a half!
Just before noon on Saturday 25 April, 2015, was when the first earthquake struck Nepal. Lasting just 45 seconds; causing devastation, changing lives forever. 45 seconds that caused over 8000 people to lose their lives and over 6 million families to lose their homes. 45 Seconds is the time it would take to sing a verse of the Hymn, ‘Let us build a House’.
Let us build a house where love can dwell
and all can safely live,
a place where saints and children tell
how hearts learn to forgive;
built of hopes and dreams and visions,
rock of faith and vault of grace;
here the love of Christ shall end divisions:
All are welcome,
all are welcome,
all are welcome in this place.
Our partner the United Mission to Nepal (UNM) has just completed the training of the first 125 stone masons who will support the re-construction of damaged rural houses in Dhading district. They are the first of a planned 500 traditional and locally based masons who are receiving practical training on Earthquake Resistant Building Construction Techniques. The training has been carried out to nationally agreed standards and will enable these men to support the re-construction and gain much needed employment.
Now they should be able to start on our house and a half.
