This was a nice activity we used in Summer 2018 Messy Church when we had prayer as our theme.
Prayer is as natural as breathing and God is as close to us as our next breath. Try breathing in saying “Jesus” and breathe out saying “thank you”, concentrate on your breathing.
Make a Model Lung
You will need: Transparent plastic bottle with lid, sharp scissors, 2 round balloons, straw, selotape, optional extras “teeth and lips” sweeties, sharpies, plasticene.
Cut botton of bottle off with sharp scissors and make a straw sized hole in lid, Blow up first balloon and let it down again this will be the lung, blow up the other balloon, let it down again and then tie it, cut the top half off, the bit with the knot will be the diaphragm. Selotape the lung to the straw windpipe leaving no leaks at all, put the straw windpipe up though the hole in the bottom of the bottle rib cage, out the top and through the bottle lid, screw the lid on and seal with plasticene. Check it is all sealed and then stretch the diaphragm over the bottom of the bottle with the knot pointing out, selotape it on sealing it well all the way round. Optional put teeth or lips on the mouth of the straw, draw a heart on the rib cage.
Move the diaphragm and you should hear air rush in the windpipe and see the lung fill up. Compare with your own breathing.
